Why does Taiwan want Canada’s LNG?

A conversation with Dr. Harry Tseng, Head of the Taipei Economic & Cultural Office in Canada (Taiwan’s Ambassador to Canada)

Energy security is critical for Taiwan – the global leader in the production of semiconductors, including over 90% of advanced chips. Moreover, Taiwan’s energy security supports Canada and other countries’ access to some of the most important technologies for everyday life – from our vehicles, to MRI scanners in medicine, to artificial intelligence (AI).

In an interview with Energy for a Secure Future (ESF), Dr. Harry Tseng, Head of the Taipei Economic & Cultural Office in Canada (Taiwan’s Ambassador to Canada), emphasized Taiwan’s growing need for liquefied natural gas (LNG) and its interest in Canada as a potential supplier.

“Right now, the most important source of power supply is natural gas, which takes up to 41.5% of the total power demand, and followed by coal at 40%,” Dr. Tseng explained. With the phase-out of nuclear energy underway in the country and with growing energy demand driven, Taiwan is looking to Canada as an energy partner.

Canada, with its abundant LNG resources, represents an important opportunity for Taiwan to secure reliable, low emission energy.

As His Excellency points out – many in Canada don’t have a good understanding of Taiwan and the role our energy could play in their security, environmental improvement and societal well-being. Through these conversations, Energy for a Secure Future hopes to build greater understanding of the energy needs of Canada’s allies and ways for us to play a positive partnership role.

Key quote by Dr. Tseng:

“The export of Canadian LNG to Taiwan has been on our agenda of trade talks for a long time (…) If Canada can quickly expedite your capacity for LNG export, and if we can align this with Taiwan’s needs, you can become a very important LNG supplier to Taiwan.”
